A short one and a half hour flight out of Miami will bring you to the rugged coastline of the island of Hispaniola. The island, discovered by Christopher Columbus in 1492, is divided into two parts, the Dominican Republic on the eastern side and Haiti on the western side. Haiti, meaning ‘land of mountains’ in the ancient Arawakan Indian tongue, is a mountain biker’s paradise. Tens of thousands of miles of footpaths carve through the mountains, perfect for mountain biking. The footpaths are the main way of getting around in Haiti, usually for the Haitians on foot or by horseback.
You will arrive in Cap-Haitian at about 12 noon or 1:00pm, where the temperature will be in the mid 80’s. You will be picked up and transported to Cormier Plage Resort Hotel by air-conditioned bus. The 35 min ride will take you through downtown Cap-Haitian and up into the hills overlooking the 300 year-old city. Upon arriving at Cormier Plage, you will be checked in and then may enjoy a scrumptious “Cormier Buffet” and cocktails.
Twenty minutes to the east of Cormier lies the bay of Labadie. Steeped in history and pirate lore, this Royal Caribbean resort is the perfect place to end your first day of travel and begin your new adventure. After relaxing at Cormier for a bit, you will board a bus for Labadie. There you will enjoy a boat ride across the mirror-like bay to Labadie Village, you can explore some of the local historical sites, including an old pirate tavern, barter with the locals for artwork, or just enjoy the ambience. The boat trip back will open your eyes to the beauty of a Haitien sunset on the water. Back at the hotel, supper is at 7:30pm, and there will be a briefing during dessert about the upcoming activities of the week.
At 8:00 am, after a delicious breakfast buffet, we will offer an orientation session which includes: tips and tricks for biking in Haiti, Haiti do’s and don’ts, meeting the rest of the crew, and an equipment check. After a short bus ride up to Fort Labadie, we will trek eastward towards Cap-Haitian, arriving in the early afternoon at Hotel Mont Joli. A light lunch will be waiting for us, and those of you who wish to explore Cap Haitian and Ft. Picolet may do so. Those who want to do more biking may bike back to Cormier, or if you just want to get back and hit the beach, then a shuttle will take you. Supper will be at the same time as the previous night, 7:30 pm, as will the evening briefing.
Marmelade – San Souci is going to be your first big day. This 37 mi trek will take you from the top of Puilboreau at approximately 3,000 ft, through some of the most scenic mountainscapes in the Caribbean, and down some of the longest and most fun downhills around. You will rake up between two to three hours of heart stopping, adrenalin pumping, downhill fun, arriving at the town of Milot mid to late afternoon. From there you will bike a few minutes to the Palace of San Souci. Built in the early 1800’s by King Henry Christophe, Palais San Souci was one of the most beautiful architectural wonders in the Western Hemisphere until an earthquake destroyed most of it in a 19th century earthquake and fire. You will enjoy a light lunch in the King’s dining hall at Palais San Souci, then bus back to Cormier for a well-deserved dip in the afternoon surf.
The Citadel, the big day, will test your skill as a mountain biker to the limit. This massive fortress, which was built by King Henry Christophe atop a 2,000 ft peak, will taunt you the whole way up. Only three miles…you may think that it is going to be a cinch. If you end up having to catch a ride up with the support truck, don’t feel bad, for only the most experienced and determined riders have ever made it to the top. Once you reach the top, you will be able to explore the massive fortress or just lounge around enjoying the beautiful view and lunch. It will be just a light lunch though, because you are about to embark on one of the most dangerous, fast-paced downhills in Haiti. Caution is a must, and we will have to insist that you stay close to our guides. We will have four guides available for this downhill, and each will descend at a different pace. Depending on the class of biker you are, you will choose which one with which to descend. The half crazy pros will go first. Once at the bottom, you will shuttle back to Cormier, where after a hot shower, you can enjoy a beachside barbeque and trade stories of near misses on the Citadel downhill.
Le Borgne (or O Boy, as the local people say) is less than 30 nautical miles east of Cap-Haitian. You will start after breakfast with a 45 min speedboat ride to the town of Le Borgne. Your bikes and the support crew will already be waiting for you there. The Borgne -Haut Limbe trail offers you a chance to enjoy some of Haiti’s jungle trails, some more spectacular downhills, and some great scenery to boot. This 41 mi trek is the perfect way to wind down your adventure in Haiti. Back at Cormier you can enjoy a good buffet and cocktails before you turn in for the evening. For tomorrow it will be time to end your Haitian adventure and head home.
